Water polo exhibition match at Royal Masonic School, Bushey on Sports Day 1960.
(I was in the Vth form). Tek Kenney is referee.
02a
I first played water polo at school (in summer 1958 in my IIIrd form). Water polo was played on our inter house basis and was very popular (there would be more spectators at an interhouse league match at school than at a National league Premier? I match). Water polo was the one sport I was outstanding at).

SB03
03a On leaving school and starting medical school at St Mary's London I joined the swimming and water polo club, There was a 20 yard pool in the basement at St Mary's. I received a lot of encouragement from John Kerr. This is my first report as hon sec of the club in 1964.

08a The London University team 1967 to 1968. Jim Shekhdar, who was the best player I ever played with and later rowed the Pacific single handed, and Jack Gauldie a Canadian are not in the photo. Both played for GB as did Dave Chapman who is on the far right in the back row of the photograph. John Littleton is on the far left in the back row, I am next to him, Graham Jupp is next to Dave Chapman and Roger Marwood is second from the right in the front row. We were the 7 who won the BUSF championship and were selected en bloc for British Universities.

21a In 1968 I received the Bannister trophy (cowinner) from Sir Roger Bannister as the joint outstanding Mary's sportsperson. It was a very bad year!
21a

21b I played for Otter first team from 1967 to 1971 and was hon sec in 1971. We oscillated between the first division and second divisions of the premier league. In the first division we played the likes of Cheltenham, Polytechnic (the best team), Sutton and Cheam, Penguin, Walsall, Aston, Birkenhead, Leamington and Liverpool. I played defence and the hardest player to defend against was Nigel Horton of Aston (also a British Lion second row). The players for Otter were John Towers (GB goalkeeper), Bob Burn, Tony Milton (GB and GB swimmer in the 4th place relay team at the Melbourne Olympics), Peter Stevens, Roger Looker (Harlequins rugby player), John Fox, Geoff Talbot and several other players. Duncan Kemp (GB captain) and Tich Mclachlan (SA international swimmer), and Neil Payne had left Otter.

31a My best swimming performance was winning the 200 back in the National Championships in Sheffield in 2009 in 3.06.59. I beat David Langley by 0.4 sec but he died from a brain tumour not long after so probably wasn't at his best. I repeated the win in 2010 but in a much slower time.

33a I swam in the Otter 4 by 200 freestyle relay in Sheffield in 2010 and we set a European and GB record. It wasn't as good as it sounds though. I was the slowest on the team and it was a soft record (a new event that year).
